R. S. Grignon and C. A. Buchheim). With introductions, notes, and period illustrations, including a frontispiece depicting Luther before the Diet of Worms, 1521.
This beautiful First American Edition is in well preserved condition. The pages are clean, crisp, and unmarked, remaining tight and square in their binding. The blue cloth boards are well-preserved, with black leather along the spine. Although a former library book, the pages of this Reynal & Hitchcock copy are unaffected. The paper and print quality are excellent. Saint-Exupéry recounts his experience as a pilot for the pioneering French aviation company Aéropostale and chronicles his miraculous survival after the Sahara crash of 1935. This account later inspired The Little Prince, which begins with the pilot narrator stranded in the desert. Saint-Exupéry wrote the dedication to American airline pilots specifically for this Reynal & Hitchcock edition. Lewis Galantière's translation of Wind, Sand and Stars won the National Book Award for nonfiction. The American Translators Association later named a prestigious award in his honour — the Lewis Galantière Award.
