The book is a mix of biography, adventure, and historical narrative, telling the story of an extraordinary elephant named Modoc and her lifelong bond with a young boy named Bram Gunterstein.

Matt Nolte, a talented illustrator and character designer, is widely known for his work in the animation industry. Nolte played a significant role in several Pixar films as a character designer and art director. Notably, he was the character art director for Brave, which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2013. While the award was given for the film as a whole, Nolte's contributions to the character designs were an integral part of its success.
