Verlag, München, printed in Austria. Das Boot is one of the most acclaimed German war novels of the twentieth century, drawing on Buchheim's own wartime experience as a naval correspondent aboard a German U-boat. The novel follows a submarine crew through a harrowing North Atlantic patrol during the winter of 1941, and later inspired the celebrated 1981 film adaptation of the same name by Wolfgang Petersen.
