The red cloth boards are clean and very well preserved, with an elaborate blind-stamped panel to the front board that remains crisp and well defined, including the motto Diev et mon droit and the initials H R. Gilt titling and ornamental devices to the spine are bright and fully legible. The binding is firm and tight. Pages are clean, free of marks, and retain their deckle edges. The frontispiece reproduces R. Caxton Woodville's painting The Charge of the British at Quebec and is protected by a tissue guard printed with a vignette of the Wolfe and Montcalm monument. Each volume in the set carries a facsimile binding of a historically significant original. The binding of this volume reproduces that of the copy of Assertio Septem Sacramentorum presented by Henry VIII to Pope Leo X. According to the binding note in the volume, it was executed by Thomas Berthelet, the Royal Binder, who was the first to employ gold tooling in England.

The Great Events by Famous Historians, edited by Rossiter Johnson, LL.D., was published in 1905 by The National Alumni, New York, as a limited United Empire Edition of one thousand complete sets. This is Volume I, covering B.C. 5867–451, and the volume that carries the set's official limitation statement, registered as No. 363 of 1,000 complete sets, along with a facsimile signature believed to be that of King Edward VII. The boards are bound in deep red cloth, elaborately blind-stamped in a repeating geometric and foliate pattern. The spine is lettered in bright gold against the same red cloth. The binding is firm and the pages are clean, unmarked, deckle-edged, and show very little sign of aging, with the tissue guard protecting the frontispiece present and intact.
