A beautiful hardcover in fine condition. The navy blue cloth boards are clean and square, with an elaborate blind-stamped decorative panel to the front board that remains crisp and well-defined. Gilt titling and ornamental devices to the spine are bright and fully legible. The binding is firm and tight with no looseness at the joints. Pages are bright throughout, free of marks, stamps, or annotations, with only light toning consistent with age. Several signatures remain unopened, their folded page edges never separated by letter opener or paper knife, meaning those sections have never been read. We have left them intact. The Great Events by Famous Historians is an ambitious 20-volume set presenting world history through the original narratives of noted historians, arranged chronologically. Edited by Rossiter Johnson, LL.D., with associate editors Charles F. Horne, Ph.D., and John Rudd, LL.D., and published by The National Alumni, New York. This volume covers the period 1661 to 1715. Each volume in the set carries a facsimile binding of a historically significant original; the binding of this volume reproduces a celebrated Grolier binding held in the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, executed in the shop of Aldus Manutius, the Scholar Printer of Venice. The Grolier motto "Io Grolierii et Amicorum" ("For Grolier and his Friends") is reproduced just as it appears on the original.
