    Germany

A 1974 Parkland Verlag Stuttgart licensed reprint (Lizenzausgabe from Transitbooks AG Zurich) of the complete Volksmärchen der Deutschen, following the text of the 1782-86 edition and reproducing the illustrations from the 1842 edition. Johann Karl August Musäus was a Weimar schoolmaster and early collector of German folk tales whose five-volume work predated the Brothers Grimm and was among the most purchased books of the late 18th century. Of the four illustrators credited, Ludwig Richter is the most widely regarded German illustrator of the mid-19th century. He produced woodcuts for Grimm editions and illustrated books in a detailed Romantic style that became the visual standard for German fairy tale. His work for the 1842 Musäus edition is among his most celebrated. Parkland Verlag Stuttgart were known for well-produced hardcover reprints of German classics in their Klassikerbibliothek series.
