The text is entirely in German and typeset in Fraktur, the historic blackletter script once ubiquitous in German printing. Wilhelm Busch (1832–1908) was one of the most influential German humorists and illustrators of the nineteenth century, widely regarded as a pioneer of the modern comic strip.
