Published by HarperCollins Children's Books, New York, in 2007, this first edition, first printing hardcover presents The Nutcracker as retold and illustrated by Susan Jeffers, one of the most distinguished illustrators in the history of American children's literature. A graduate of the Pratt Institute, Jeffers received the Caldecott Honor for Three Jovial Huntsmen (1974) — also winner of the Golden Apple Award at the Biennale of Illustrations Bratislava — the ABBY Award for Brother Eagle, Sister Sky, and the Golden Kite Award for Picture Book Illustration for Forest of Dreams (1989). Over a career spanning more than fifty years, she created over forty-seven children's books, including collaborations with Rosemary Wells and illustrations for Robert Frost's Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. Based on E.T.A. Hoffmann's original fairy tale, first performed as a ballet at the Maryinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1892, the story follows Marie and her Nutcracker Prince as they sail to an enchanted kingdom of sweets, where bravery and love break the spell that binds the Prince. Illustrated throughout in Jeffers's characteristically luminous and intricately detailed full-colour paintings. A handsome and collectible copy of a warmly regarded title. Ships within Canada. International orders welcome through AbeBooks.
