Margaret Irwin was an English historical novelist recognised for well-researched and occasionally heart-breaking historical fiction. Young Bess is the first novel in her Elizabeth I trilogy, followed by Elizabeth, Captive Princess (1948) and Elizabeth and the Prince of Spain (1953). The novel covers 1545-1553, following the young Princess Elizabeth from age 12 to 19, and focuses on the scandal surrounding her relationship with Thomas Seymour during the latter years of Henry VIII's reign. The novel was later adapted into a film starring Jean Simmons.
