Alistair MacLeod was a Canadian novelist, short story writer, and longtime professor of English and creative writing at the University of Windsor, raised among extended family in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The same year Island was published, MacLeod's only novel, No Great Mischief, made him the first Canadian writer to win the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, bringing him international recognition after decades of being known primarily within Canada.
