The pages are tight and entirely unmarked, and the book itself is tight, square, and unmarked throughout. The House of Doors by Tan Twan Eng is a novel set in 1921. Lesley Hamlyn and her husband, Robert, are living at Cassowary House in the Straits Settlement of Penang. Their quiet life is disrupted when "Willie" Somerset Maugham, a famed writer and old friend of Robert's, arrives for an extended visit. As Maugham settles in, he begins to suspect that Lesley's marriage is not what it seems. His suspicions deepen when he learns of her past connection to the Chinese revolutionary movement of Sun Yat Sen.
