A hardcover first edition, D. Appleton-Century Company, New York, 1945, Book-of-the-Month Club printing, in very good condition. The royal blue cloth boards are square, handsomely lettered in gilt script to both the front board and spine. The spine shows light tonal fading consistent with over eighty years of age, while the front board retains its deep color with the gilt title and author name remaining crisp and bright. The binding is firm and tight with no looseness at the joints. Pages are clean throughout. No dust jacket present. Arch of Triumph was Remarque's second worldwide bestseller, following All Quiet on the Western Front, and was written during his years of exile in the United States. Set in Paris in 1939, the novel follows Ravic, a stateless German surgeon performing illegal operations to survive, evading arrest and deportation, while an unlikely love affair pulls him back toward life. Adapted into a feature film in 1948 by director Lewis Milestone, starring Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer, and again as a television film in 1985.
