Collected by Russian ethnographer Aleksandr Afanas'ev in the mid-19th century, this anthology is the foundational source of Russian folk narrative in English, encompassing over 170 tales. Translated by Norbert Guterman, with a commentary by Roman Jakobson. Illustrated throughout by Alexander Alexeieff, a Russian-born French artist whose engraving-influenced line work is a defining feature of this edition. The illustrated cover design shown here is specific to this printing; later printings carry a different cover.
