Charles Dickens collaborated with several illustrators over his career, two of the most notable being George Cattermole and Hablot Knight Browne, known as "Phiz." George Cattermole, a respected painter and illustrator, contributed to The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. Renowned for his detailed historical and architectural backgrounds, Cattermole's work enriched Dickens’s settings with a strong sense of 18th-century atmosphere, often infused with Gothic and historical elements. "Phiz" played a central role in visualizing Dickens’s characters and narratives. His expressive illustrations brought emotional depth to the stories, using dynamic facial expressions and body language to highlight the social and emotional themes woven throughout Dickens’s work.
